What is a Domain Name?

A domain is that combination of words that make up the name your visitors would type into their browser before landing on your website or blog.

A domain name is so important in the success of a blog or website and that’s why you see those links above just incase you want to buy your next domain name.

That’s a topic for another time.

Now that your domain is up and ready, you need to put it to work.

If you bought a domain name from godaddy, you should be familiar with that term “Get your domain to work“.

I love and use Godaddy domain registrar alot that’s why I reference them in almost of all my articles about starting a blog.

I won’t waste your time anymore.

I bought a domain now what

I bought a domain now what Things you Should Do Immediately

1. Buy a Web host [Compulsory]

You’ve just registered the domain, great decision so far. Unfortunately the domain isn’t going to function without a web hosting. you just got the domain name but no host yet.

Wait a Minute

You now ask Prosper, “What is a Webhost”?

Before then, all you are going to do after buying your domain name is to actually create your website [a professional website or blog] and bring your business online.

A webhosting company is like a storage where your files such as

  • Images
  • Blog Posts
  • Plugins
  • Themes
  • Other Files
  • Etc

would be stored.

There are lots of webhosting companies online but which is the best?

If you ask me I’d say there’s nothing as best webhosting, there’s just one that’s best for you. While there are some big name webhosting companies such as

  • Bluehost
  • Host gator
  • Dreamhost
  • Etc.

Those guys are damn good for sure however. I don’t use them on this blog. I use Namecheap as at the time of writing this post.

They’ve been great so far. If you still ask me which you should go for as a beginner, I’d recommend namecheap because when it comes to customer service they are simply the best.

This does not mean others aren’t good too. But I definitely can’t recommend all for you.

So Pick Namecheap, and to better serve you, namecheap is giving a discount for your first year as a new customer you get hosting at $9.88 first year.

Click here to get $9.88 for the first year now. Renewal is around $38.88 which is very affordable.

You are going to use namecheap for hosting your website,

So Keep Read;

Take action, go to the namecheap website, if you are asked about domain name to use.  Choose I already have a domain and enter in that domain.

Continue to purchase your hosting plan. The higher the hosting plan you chose, the better for you, I still suggest as a beginner, start with the Value Plan.

2. Link or Connect your Domain to the Webhosting you Purchased

Congrats on getting your hosting setup.

This is a step closer to starting your website and launch your small business on the internet etc..

Now you need to connect this domain name to your webhosting company. It’s very simple stuff to do. Yes, I understand you’re a beginner and would not like coding, we all hate it at first.

All you need to do here is:

  • Get the nameserver namecheap . Namecheap will always send the details of their nameservers to your email [Gmail, Yahoo etc]. In the welcome guide.
  • Take up the nameserver and update in your domain dashboard where you see “enter custom nameserver”

If you don’t know how to do this Read

Following above links should help you setup your nameservers.

You don’t need to worry much. Just incase you don’t get even using above links, you can free email the support and they’d be glad to help you out quickly.

When you’re done connecting your domain to the webhosting account then you need to take the next necessary step.

3. Install the Perfect Platform your Blog

Don’t know what a blogging platform really is? Its a content management system that can allow you publish articles easily. You must have come across lots of websites but wonder:

  • How they write their posts and get it online
  • Post Pictures right in their contents
  • Adding Videos
  • Lots others.

A CMS fully content management system is responsible for all these wonderful features.

I’d show you the best for your blog. Keep Reading

There are lots of blogging platforms and some of them including

  • Blogger
  • WordPress.org
  • Drupal
  • Joomla
  • Etc.

But the best for a professional blog or website is the popularly known WordPress.org. Used by Billions of websites you come across online.

In fact the blog you are reading this post right now is setup with wordpress.

Why WordPress and Non other?

  • WordPress is newbie or beginner friendly.
  • Very Responsive
  • Best for Publishing and lots other features.
  • SEO Advantage

So the big question now remains how do you install wordpress for you? or how do you create a wordpress site?

This is one of the simplest thing to do on the internet that any beginner can easily carryout easily and fast.

Fortunately I would walk you through installing wordpress for your website or blog

How to Install WordPress

There are more than one way to install wordpress. I would only show you the easiest way to do it.

Install WordPress using Cpanel via Softaculous Apps Installer

This is what people refer to as one click install. Yes it does it.

Login to your Cpanel and scroll down to where you see the WordPress Logo or Under Softaculous Apps Installer.

4. Get a Premium Theme

If you want to stand out in the crowd, then you need to be unique.

This has to do with the design of your blog.

You’ve come across many websites or blogs on the internet and you begin to wonder the kind of lovely theme they use for their site.

They either higher a developer to design these themes for their blogs or buy these themes from sites like mythemeshop or themeforest.

However there are free themes on the internet, I don’t recommend them if you need to build a brand. Get a premium theme from mythemeshop as they are one of the best right now offering wordpress themes for as low as $59.

5. Configure SEO for your Blog or Website

While I won’t go into much detail here as you may be a beginner.  You need to get your new website to appear on google search results and other search engines and this is where SEO (Search Engine Optimization) comes in.

If you are completely new to Search engine optimization, you should take a look at the above links or browse my SEO Category here.  Nevertheless, as a beginner, install the yoast seo plugi here from the wordpress.org repository.

Configuring seo is a basic way to start seeing your website or blog and its contents on google and other search engines.

6. Write your Post and Create Necessary Pages

This step is very important.

You need to get your contents on the internet right now and the step to take in order to achieve this step is to actually write and publish your first post and create some necessary pages.

Your first post can be something about why you started the blog and the launch details.

  • Why I started Tipsonblogging.com
  • The Launch of Tipsonblogging
  • Welcome to my Website or Blog
  • Etc.

Necessary Pages:

  • About Us: This is where you tell visitors what they stand to benefit while reading your blog, its the aim
  • Contact Us: Make it easy for users to contact you via a contact form, via email, phone etc.
  • Privacy Policy: Do you collect some information from readers, do you use cookies to deliver contents etc. This page is also a must have if you want to monetize your website with google adsense
  • Terms of Use: Not so necessary but also a good way to inform your website visitors about your terms
  • The Write for Us Page: As time goes on, as you begin to create contents and grow your blog, readers or other blog autors may want to contribute to your blog also known as guest posting. This page is where you tell them what they need to know before writing a post on your blog.
  • Advertise: You will need this later, if you need to make money with your blog using adverts.
  • Etc.

While these pages are good, you should not go about creating lots of pages. Keep it simple.

7. Grow your Blog

Above steps won’t be complete except you actually grow your blog to one that can impact lives and make money too.

To Grow your blog takes the same action day in, day out according to Susan Velez.
These posts below should help you grow your blog or website easily and help you create an online presence.

The amazing thing is that You don’t need offline stuffs like business cards, etc..to run your blog as it all has to do with the internet.

And Wait:

But just incase you don’t want to setup your site right now, below are other few things you can do with your domain.

We will list first and then explain the, in details to you.

  • You can create a custom email with your new domain
  • Use it for your portfolio
  • Have the domain turned into affiliate cloaking link
  • Create a One-Page Site to collect customers emails also known as Stand alone Page.
  • Redirect the domain to your social media profile or any other profile

1. Create a Custom Email e.g prosper@tipsonblogging.com

I don’t fancy the prosper@gmail.com instead I love to make it prosper@tipsonblogging.com, you need it too.

If you own a business and would like to make it so professional then this is another big super dope thing to do. Instead of the ugly “yourname@gmail.com” you can have “yourname@yourdomain.com”

So cool right?

If you would love that, then click here to get a google suit account for your professional email setup within few minutes.

You build more credibility having your own very custom email and make you look ready for business.

2. Use it for your Porfolio

Well I want to let you know that I work online as a freelancer on fiverr, seoclerks etc..

So what am i trying to say?

You may be a freelancer; how about you turn your domain into a portfolio where you show the jobs you recently completed for clients?

You can make a living out of this, having a website where you share your work will definitely bring more revenue.

You can easily setup a portfolio website, click here to learn how [open in new tab]

3. Cloak your Affiliate Link with the Domain Name

Affiliate marketing sometimes; most affiliate programs require you get a specific code to promote their products.

The problem is sites like facebook may not accept this affiliate link but you can actually mask your domain with the affiliate link.

This way you can share your domain on facebook and other social media networks when anyone clicks they will be automatically redirected to your affiliate link. Example: honestproductreviews.co.uk

This is very cool as you mask your affiliate link with your domain. You can always do this from your domain registrar domain redirection settings page.

 4. Create a One-Page Site to collect customers emails also known as Stand alone Page.

This is unlike the above.

My Goodness, you don’t even need to write contents to make money or customers.

All you need is a one page website that people can visit and be turned to your potential customers.

This is how it works:

  • You setup the stand alone page
  • You get traffic to it
  • People visit and subscribe to your mailing list
  • You send them offers or your products or setup an autoresponder that sends them a series of emails immediately they signup
  • You make money on autopilot

This is known as email marketing.

Once they are in your email list, you can promote whatever offer that is related to your niche to them.

So how to create a Landing Page

There are lots of tools to use but we personally recommend thrivethemes builder for your landing page, they are simply the best for now in 2018.

Also they will help you set it up in few minutes, such fast and efficient customer service.

Click here to create your landing page.

5. Redirect the domain to your social media profile or any other profile

Another option is this;

If you have a facebook page and not ready to setup a website at the moment then your best bet will be to redirect the domain to your social media page or profile.

E.g. When anyone visits www.yourdomain.com they will be redirected to your facebook page url: www.facebook.com/awesome-facebook-page.

Don’t panic, it’s that super easy

  • Go to your domain registrar dashboard
  • Click settings
  • Find redirection and
  • Finally enter your facebook page or profile url and you are done

So if you had these questions going on in your mind;

  • What do I do after buying a domain name?
  • Can my Domain function all by itself?
  • I bought a domain now what
  • I have a domain now what?
  • Add others…

Then definitely this post has been able to clear that.

However if you still have questions, don’t hesitate to drop in the comment section.

All to your online success.

Do share with friends on social media.

  1. Hi Prosper,

Great tips on what to do after buying a new domain. I wish I would’ve had this when I started my very first blog back in the day.

Thanks for the mention in your post, I was definitely surprised to see that.

These steps will help anyone get their blog set up properly. Not to mention they’ll also have a fantastic theme with your recommendations.

#7 is the hardest part for new bloggers. It’s easy to get frustrated when you don’t grow as quickly as you want to.

However, if they follow the advice you share on your blog, I have no doubt they’ll be happy with their results.

Thanks for sharing these tips have a great day 🙂

  2. This post is quite insightful, but too geared towards wordpress and hosting. What of those who wants to use blogger for their blogs. There is practically not much here for them. I don’t really like namecheap shared hosting. It didn’t do me well the few times I tried it. The site always went down or unavailable. I dunno if it’s the server they souter slot me in that had the problem.

    • Hi Martins,

Yeah, WordPress is recommended by many as a more flexible platform for blogging as a result of its simplicity and professional being.

However I’d be doing a post soon for those on the blogger platform however I recommend wordpress for any beginner.

Concerning namecheap, sorry to hear you had a bad experience with them. I’ve been using them On this Blog for quite some months without issues.

Might be a server breakout but I believe it’s fixed and that’s why I recommended hostgator as an alternative.

      Have a great time 😉

  3. Wonderful article.
I was really looking for a detailed step by step guide to do this because I was really confused about doing this.
    Thanks a lot, Bro…

  4. This post is really great I just saved it offline so that later I can practice it and also share it with my friends. Keep posting great articles.

  5. Wow! It seems this post was mainly created for me, the title of the topic is what I have been asking since I bought a domain for my new blog.

    But now I know.

But I still have something bothering me, that’s is “how to get organic search” from Google since my DA is still at birth.

    Well done Mr. Prosper

    • Hi Comfort,

Getting organic traffic is all about having the right easy to rank keywords for your niche.

The DA doesnt really stop anything, i rank new domains on google first page immediately after publish.

You can always check the keyword research category on this blog using the search button.

      Have a great time.
